Building our own space

Hey Reader,

For a while now, I’ve been thinking about the way we connect here. I write, you read. Sometimes, you hit reply, and I get to read your incredible thoughts and stories. I genuinely love it.

But it’s always felt a bit… disconnected. Like a one-way street with a few wonderful letters passed back.

I find myself wishing for more. I wish this was a real conversation, a place where this stops being a monologue and becomes a true dialogue. A space where you can connect with me, and just as importantly, connect with each other over the ideas we explore here.

I looked around for a tool to build this, a place for us. But I couldn't find anything that felt right. The options were either chaotic social media feeds or rigid platforms that would force us into a box that isn't ours.

There was no quiet, thoughtful space for our community to gather.

So, I’ve decided to build it myself. For us.

The project is called Commune.

My vision for Commune is simple: to create the space I wish we had. A private, beautifully designed home for our community, right alongside this newsletter. A place where we can have deeper, threaded conversations about the ideas I share. A place for you to ask me anything, and for me to learn from you. A place for you to meet each other.

It's not about replacing the newsletter. It's about giving it a heart.

I'm starting this journey now, from scratch. As I build Commune, I'll be sharing the entire process right here. The architectural decisions (yes, I'll be using AsyncAPI), the design challenges, and the whole story of bringing an idea to life.

You are already subscribed to this newsletter, so you will get all these updates. But I have a special invitation.

I'm setting up a dedicated list for those of you who want to be the founding members of our new community space when it’s ready. There’s no commitment, but it’s a way for me to know who is most excited to help shape this from the very beginning.

If you’re interested in being one of the first to join, simply click the button below to confirm your spot on the founding members list.

This feels like the most honest and exciting project I could possibly be working on. It’s a direct extension of my desire to connect with all of you on a deeper level.

Let's build our own space.

P.S. My new book, Shift, is now available for pre-order.

It's the definitive guide to the politics, persuasion, and strategy of driving architectural change. This is the stuff they don't teach you in engineering school.

Pre-Order: The "Shift" Book

This isn’t another technical book on EDA. Shift is the playbook for the other half of the job: getting people on board.... Read more

This week, I want to shine a spotlight on a newsletter: Start Data Engineering. If our conversations about Event-Driven Architecture resonate with you, I think you'll love their approach.

Start Data Engineering

Bringing software engineering best practices to data engineering.

Over the last decade, I've built highly scalable distributed data platforms and helped companies scale to processing multiple exabytes of data. My mission is to bring software practices followed by top tech companies to data engineering and help data engineers level up. I help data engineers land high paying tech jobs and significantly up skill themselves.

On November 3rd, I announced I had joined Hookdeck to lead Outpost. It looked like the perfect setup on paper: a founder-like role, a smart team, and a problem space (EDA) that I’ve spent the last 12 years mastering. On November 24th, exactly three weeks later, I resigned. I’ve spent the last month processing this. I’m sharing the story not because I like talking about my mistakes, but because I bet a lot of you are stuck in the exact same trap I fell into. I spent over a decade in the...

9 years of AsyncAPI Initiative

Nine years. That is actually wild to think about. If you asked me back in 2016 if I saw this becoming a global standard, I would have laughed. I wasn’t trying to start a movement. I was just trying to fix a specific headache I had. I wanted to generate documentation and code skeletons for my event-driven services. I was using RabbitMQ, and the whole thing was a total mess. So I built a tool to fix it. For the first two years, I felt like I was speaking to a wall. I’d push code, write about...

Open Source Outbound Webhooks Infrastructure

I’m writing this to share some personal news that I’m incredibly excited about. I’ve officially joined Hookdeck as VP & General Manager of a new product called Outpost. This isn’t a decision I took lightly. My time since leaving Postman has been invaluable, allowing me to focus on building my own ventures. But when Alex at Hookdeck showed me what they were building, I saw a rare opportunity. A chance to solve a fundamental, unglamorous problem that plagues our industry and aligns perfectly...
